We are blessed that you are here... today. We hope you find your time spent here a blessing as well.
We are a community journeying to live as disciples of Jesus, practice hospitality in community and bring hope through worship, fellowship and service.
On any given day, if you have a chance to visit this sacred place where we call our community's home, you will meet strangers as well as friends who will welcome you, strive to serve you in Christ's name and offer you the hand of fellowship.
On Sundays, we pray you will join us in worship as we join together to celebrate who God is and who we are as God's children.
In the between time, may God hold you in the embrace of God's love,
As we move in to the New Year, still in the Glow of the knowledge that Jesus Christ has been born to us. He has come to lead Gods people to a new life. As we go into January and the cold winter days to follow, contemplation of the upcoming year is on our minds. As we seek to understand our roles as believers and a Christian community, I would like to highlight an exciting opportunity to stimulate thought and discussion.
I want to tell you about one of my favorite Christian authors, Shane Claiborne.
Shane is a prominent speaker, activist, and best-selling author. Shane worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, and founded The Simple Way in Philadelphia, a Christian community that serves and lives among the poor of that city. He heads up Red Letter Christians, a movement of folks who are committed to living "as if Jesus meant the things he said." Shane is a champion for grace which has led him to jail advocating for the homeless, and to places like Iraq and Afghanistan to stand against war. And now grace fuels his passion to end the death penalty.
Shane has written over eight books, including his most recent Executing Grace: How the Death Penalty Killed Jesus and Why It’s Killing Us. He has been featured in several films including "Another World Is Possible" and "Ordinary Radicals." His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Shane speaks over one hundred times a year, nationally and internationally. His work has appeared in Esquire, SPIN, Christianity Today, and The Wall Street Journal, and he has been on everything from Fox News and Al Jazeera to CNN and NPR. He’s given academic lectures at Harvard, Princeton, Liberty, Duke, and Notre Dame. And here is the most exciting part … in January, Shane is coming to speak at our church and he will be preaching at a Sunday worship service. On January 28, beginning at 3:00 PM, Shane will give a talk based on Executing Grace about why he and others believe that Christians should support the abolition of the death penalty. This will be followed by a question and answer session and a reception and book signing in our Fellowship Hall. He will also be preaching in worship at 10:30 AM on January 29. Like all our events, these will be open to the public and we hope to pack the sanctuary! The Mission Committee and the Session are very excited to be able to bring Shane to Corning and we will be publicizing these events heavily in the months to come. We will also be relying on each of you to spread the word to your social circle about this important event in our community.
I believe that this issue is too important for followers of Jesus Christ to ignore. Regardless of where you stand on the death penalty, I hope you will be open to the discussion and will participate in these events and encourage others to do so as well.
