Loving Our Neighbor

The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress.  They assume such other duties as delegated to them by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the Scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people, and  assisting with the Lord’s Supper.

Deacons are commissioned as a board under the supervision and authority of the session.  Deacons are delegated with the following responsibilities:

  • Providing for Communion—supplies and scheduling
  • Assisting with Visitation
  • Assisting with the ministry of caregiving with funerals, memorial services, and receptions
  • Providing and overseeing the Christmas Day Dinner
  • Caring for College students
  • Providing for Tape Ministry
  • Providing for Care Notes and flowers
  • Arranging for transportation for those who are in need
  • Overseeing the Deacons’ Emergency Fund
