Church in the World The Church-In-The-World Committee consists of three mission action teams: Haiti Mission Trip The Church in the World Committee has confirmed the week of April 3-9, 2011 for a mission trip to Haiti. Session has discussed and approved the trip, so we are ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work! We will need lots of help to make this trip a success- this is a church-wide project. Please start thinking about what you can do to be a part of this trip. · Participant- We are hoping to have 10-12 people, from teens through adults, interested in working on building and other service projects. You do not need to be a handyman! · Prayer partner- We need prayers for God’s wisdom as we prepare, and for health, safety, effectiveness, etc. · Fundraising- We will work to raise some money as a group. If you are interested in helping to plan for this, we can use you. · Planning- There are a lot of details involved in planning an international mission trip. If you are an organizer, please consider helping in this area. If you have an interest in one of these roles, or if you just want to know how things are progressing, please email the office so you can be added to the list, or see Marty Coates. ARTICLE 1 ++++++++++ Peacemaking Visit by Rev. Len Bjorkman We were thrilled to host Rev. Len and Judy Bjorkman at our May 16 service. Len is a retired minister of 50yr service and has also served at the national level with the PC(USA) Peacemaking Program, specifically in the Middle East. At a light lunch after the service, Pastor Chris and 10 congregants (and Diane Roe) joined with the Bjorkmans to talk about peacemaking in a relaxed, informal setting. In Len's own words, he has "viewed his ministry through the lens of the Gospel of Reconciliation". Len also cited that one should not try to back away from conflict because it maybe too complicated, and that progress to peace needs a common goal. The discussion revolved around how a 'consensus' approach to conflict allows a win-win, where the 'compromise' approach is typically a win-lose siuation. This was a powerful perspective. We are inspired by the Bjorkman's message and are glad to have met this wonderful couple who lead by example! Note - Len provided the church some new educational material for Peacemaking projects... to obtain these books and Sunday school course material, contact the CWC. ARTICLE 2 ++++++++++ Local Mission by 1st Presbyterian at Habitat for Humanity (HFH) On May 26, the church was at the local HFH project as site host. We provided breakfast, snacks, and a light lunch throughout the work day. It was sweltering hot, so the availability of cool water and lemonade was well received by the work crew ! This Habitat house is being built at 266 Bridge Street in Corning, and intended for a young family of 4. Local leadership by Bruce Peffley and Jan Harvey makes these projects tick ! Looking forward to 1st Preby's participation with other local HFH projects. |
